The Video Platform Provides Users Authority to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Personal Streams

The platform is rolling out a new feature that allows them to reduce the amount of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the company disclosed that it now features in excess of 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This shift aligns with a rise in content created by AI, fueled by new AI video creators.

AI Proliferation Online

Recent reports that approximately a tenth of the fastest-growing video streams on a competing service exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A considerable share of this content is classified as “AI slop”, a term for inferior, factory-style content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that numerous viewers like content created using AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to educational videos, and we want to give people the ability to see more or less of that, depending on their own preferences,” stated a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

The service disclosed that there are now 1.3bn videos on its app identified as made with AI. In total, over 100 million media items are added to the app every day, making AI content a relatively small portion of its complete catalog.

User Control Features

Users will be in a position to limit or boost the volume of AI content they see by using the topic control setting in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Additional categories that can already be adjusted under the filter encompass politics, clothing, beauty, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

The platform’s guidelines require content makers to label lifelike AI-generated content, and it prohibits dangerous fake videos of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is unmarked can be taken down under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the service will now attach an artificially created tag to content produced via its proprietary AI systems, or flagged by an cross-platform project for identifying content made by AI. This step is intended to stop users from trying to evade the tagging system.

AI Literacy Programs

TikTok is also introducing a $2m awareness program for experts and organizations to develop learning resources about ethical AI use. This project will support educational bodies focused on teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has defended its content review process, during debate over proposals to make redundant a large number of safety staff in Britain. The company is expected to eliminate a significant number of roles in its trust and safety team in the UK capital, with labor groups and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A company official stated that people-led review would still have a role, but AI can protect employees by eliminating the most harmful content before it is viewed by humans. The platform reported a notable drop in shocking and graphic content handled by human moderators over the previous year due to reliance on its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to combine people and machines to keep the platform safe,” she said. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of unsafe media as swiftly, which is where a significant AI assistance is really helping us operate efficiently.”
