Federal authorities has officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
