A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” affirmed the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over safety standards.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
